Assamese performers at the opening ceremony of International Film Festival, Italy

The two traditional dance forms from Assam, Bihu and Bhortal Nritya has its particular significance in Assamese culture and the good news is that, now these regional dance forms are to be performed together at the same at the same international platform. In a rather good intention and with an attempt to showcase the cultural richness of the North-eastern state, the school students from the state are being invited to take part at the opening ceremony of the 45th Giffoni International Film Festival in Italy which is going to take place next week. 

Notably, this is one of the most popular and widely acclaimed international children’s film festivals in the world and the children films from all over the world are being selected to be screened in this festival. It is to take place from July 17 at Giffoni Valle Piana in Salerno province in southern Italy.

Along with thousands of children participants from across the world, a few from Assam are also being nominated to be a part of this festival. Students from the NPS International School in Guwahati are invited by the organisers who are to perform Bihu and Bhortal nritya at the opening ceremony. In addition to that, four students — Md. Nasad (Class 8), Hrishiraj Sawant (Class 9), Krishna Saha (Class 8) and Disha Boro (Class 8) will also perform Indian classical dance at the inauguration ceremony.

The director of the school, J.N. Das, said, “We are very happy that two very important dance forms of Assam will be performed at the inauguration of such a prestigious event. We are looking forward to that day.”

He also added, “A thought-provoking documentary titled ‘We are Same Same, But Different’, directed by our students, has also been selected for a special screening.”

However, it has to be mentioned here that this is not the first time that the students of the NPS International School are appreciated for their qualities. A documentary titled “Assam Bamboo Crafts” prepared by students of NPS International School have bagged the ‘Best Documentary Film’ and ‘Best Cinematography’ awards in the school students section at the 5th Dada Saheb Phalke Film Festival earlier this year.

China using India’s images of pollution to warn Chinese citizens

Other countries are now using images of India to hold as instance and there is nothing to feel good or proud at it as rather than being positive, this is an utter instance of negative impression. Not for holding an instance of progress and development of the country, rather to show the poor part of the country, neighbouring country China is using the images of polluted India to hold as warning to its citizens. The dismal side of the polluted India and its images are enough to warn one against the adversities and the disadvantages of pollution. China is doing that only by pasting images of Indian cities like Mumbai at public places.   

The impact of climate change, global warming and pollution can be really harsh on the mankind and everything else living on this planet and one must start realizing that. China, in spite of being world's largest carbon emitter, has been able to realize it on time and have, hence, taken precautionary measures as well. This, on the other hand, is not evident in India and this has led to the Indian cities sinking into pollution and life getting miserable in such places. China has already started planning for a better, healthier and pollution free future and by showing India’s images as instance it has not only warned its citizens, but have also put India to shame.  

Despite the clean India green India movement taken up by the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi, not much advancements can be noticed in terms of cleaning India and making it an environmentally friendly place.  

The issues that India is facing a lot at present leading to environmental pollution are being highlighted as the plastic garbage and sandstorms through the ads by China. In fact, the ways to address the environmental challenges are also being suggested by China in the posters.  

One of the ads states, "The beaches in Mumbai were covered in plastic garbage, teenagers, eager to release energy of youth, had no choice but to play cricket in the garbage heap."

Another advertisement speaks about Allahabad and states, "On July 12, 2015, the city of Allahabad in India was hit by sandstorms, the resulting low visibility made it impossible for pedestrian to see each others in the sand."

This is truly the time that India must realize where it is lagging behind and what are the issues that it should deal with first for keeping pollution at bay! If China can recognize the weaknesses than why cannot India?

All You Need is Goodwill for Buying Things in This Shop

By this time you might have been convinced well that goodwill, brotherly feeling and humanity has vanished from this earth seeing the wrathful incidents of man being an enemy of man and destroying lives like reaping off the crops. But in reality, humanity still persists and you can find a glimpse of that right in our very own north east India, in the state of Mizoram. This is, indeed, a very rare instance and is doubtful whether it is practiced in any other corner of the world or not, but the capital city of Mizoram, Aizawl has a shop where you can see the best example of trust. It is a tale of trust between a seller and a buyer where the former so not know who the latter will be, but still have a great faith and trust on the latter that he will pay for the good he has picked up from this open stall.

An open stall of vegetables comprising of home grown fresh vegetables, fruits and the occasional bottle of fruit juice, small dried fish, freshwater snails etc., that is what you can seen in this irregular and unusual shop made of small cardboard sheets erected or hung on one of the bamboo beams. Some other things to be found in the stall are the prices of the goods written in a barely visible handwriting on a piece of charcoal and then a plastic transparent bottle hanging along for the buyers to drop the money in exchange of the goods they have picked from the stall.

You can pay the money by dropping it on the money box or may skip also; there is nobody to keep an eye on you. The shopkeeper is letting you pick anything you want and pay on your will solely on the basis of trust and this is truly amazing. Can so pure humanity still exist somewhere in the world where one is selling goods but is not expecting that he would get the money that he deserves to get for the things sold.     

The sellers of these vegetable and other fresh natural things are mostly rural villagers who work hard in growing and picking the vegetables and fruits from the forests and then put it on open stalls. This reflects the pure heart and honesty of these people and their great trust on people.

Such a villager, mentioning their customers, said, “People are good. Nothing has ever been lost from our shop.”

One of the travellers and customers of the shopkeeper-less shops says, “Whenever I pass such shops, I make it a point to buy at least one item. But when I buy something, it makes me happy, like I’ve contributed something to something beautiful.”

Sikkim- Flying High with Time

Sikkim, the north-eastern state in the Himalayan kingdom, may be is the Indian state with least population, but with its recent impressive performances in overall sectors, it has been able to set an instance for the rest of the states by doubling its per capita GDP since 2004-05. It has only took 40 years since India declared Sikkim as the 22^nd state of the country and the rapid growth the small hilly state shown in this span of time is commendable.

Whether you count it in the field of education, poverty alleviation, tourism, sanitation and organic farming; the state has been opting for disciplined planning and hard-core obedience to the rules and regulations. This has resulted into a progressed and much more liveable state among the best Indian states. Notably, there is a population of 6,10,000 only in the state and in spite of the less number of population and geographical barriers; Sikkim has been doing far better than the rest of the North-eastern states. It has to be mentioned here that the remaining north-eastern states have registered a 5% growth only whereas Sikkim has diminished its poverty ratio. There are only 51,000 poor people in Sikkim now in comparison to 1.7 lakh in 2004-05.

The achievements secured by the hilly state have even been appreciated as ‘incredible’ by the United Nations for its best practice of human development. As stated by the UN India representative Lise Grande, no other government under similar conditions with Sikkim has achieved such success and thus, acknowledges the tiny state’s 15% growth in less than a decade as among the highest for all Indian states and one of Asia’s highest. Moreover, it is this state which has also come forward as the only state to achieve 100% sanitation coverage.

Speaking about the literacy rate of the state, it has shown an improvement from 68.8% in 2001 to 82.2% which again, is the country’s highest. The state aims to make Sikkim India’s second 100% literate state and is going pretty well on its track.

Overall, Sikkim is a place worth living, worth exploring and is worth admiring for its natural beauty and the hard core endeavours of its locals.

The First Animated Girl Superhero of The Country is on Her Way!

India’s first female boxer of the country to have bagged a medal in the Olympics, the first five time World Champion in boxing and now the first female superhero of the country to be portrayed through animation; MC Mary Kom is a woman of many traits and is a woman of few words. She hails from a remote place in the North-eastern state Manipur and today is the source of inspiration for thousands of girls in the country who too dream to be a world famous boxer and a tough woman like Mary Kom now.  

The attest news about the sensational Indian boxing ace MC Mary Kom is that she will now be seen in a new avatar, in a new look which is being planned purely for entertainment purposes. This has been announced lately that she will be given an animated look in a new animated series and with this new announcement, it is clear now that Mary Kom is the only Indian woman who will be given an animated look and who will be known as the first female superhero. The animated series featuring Mary Kom as the super woman will show her deriving powers from the gloves she wears. The name of the animated series is settled to be Mary Kom Jr.

ScreenYug Creations has taken up the project and has already signed a licensing deal with the boxer. This company is set up by former Reliance Animation CEO Ashish S Kulkarni and the deal will entitle royalty to Mary Kom on global sales of the animation series. Hence, any sort of merchandise, games, comics, online distribution, story books and e-books that will be associated with it in future will benefit the boxer and will pay her revenues.

Kulkarni says, “Most children’s shows today are boy-centric. There isn’t much to engage the girls. As a result, we found that 10-year-old girls are starting to watch general entertainment shows.”

This is certainly a noble and encouraging project that would benefit the young girls of the country and will inspire them with the power and energy of Mary Kom.

HSLC and AHSEC Examination Results Declared in Assam

Like every other year, this year as well, the students in Assam showed bright results in their HSLC and HS Final year exams, respectively. Students from both Assamese and English medium schools and colleges have passed with flying colours and the top 10 positions in both the examinations are seen to be almost equally captured by the Assamese and English medium schools’ students.

A total of 2,40,563 (62.2%) students have passed in the Class X examination this year, among which 51046 students have secured 1^st division, 95111 students secured 2^nd division and 94406 students passed in 3^rd division.

The names of the rank holders in the HSLC results include- Ripunjay Kalita (1^st), Mridul Sarma (2^nd) Satabdi Bora (3^rd); Chayanika Goswami, Prapti kalita, Ashim Majumdar (4^th); Iliyas Khan Rana, Sumana Kalita, Debashish Talukdar (5^th); Abhijit Bora, Manaswita Talukdar, Nabankur Deka, Bijit Kalita and Subhankar Hur (6^th); Sirsha Majumdar, Pratishruti Saikia and Krishna Chakravarty (7^th); Kumar Ratnadip, Sanchita Kejriwal, Kasturika Konwar, Sabira Farhin, Darshana Talukdar, Ipsita Bhuyan (8^th); Manas Kath Kazarika, Shyamanta Dey, Anwesha Bharali, Indibar Talukdar and Farnaj Alam Ahmed (9^th) and Richa Das, Nilam Kumar Dutta, Darshan Jyoti Talukdar, Gargi Sharma, Parth Pratim Nath, Rijit Konwar, Bhaskar Ghosh (10^th).

With an average pass percent of 76.05, 74.07% students in Arts, 86.76% in Science and 81.82 students passed in the Commerce stream. However, if the HSLC results this year showed boys making better performances than girls then the HS results showed girls surpassing boys. The private institutes like the junior colleges made the most of the mark in the AHSEC results in all the three streams. Salt Brook Junior College from Dibrugarh occupied 11 positions altogether in all the three streams. However, with every passing year, the Cotton College has started losing its heritage and this year, only four students, (2 in Arts and 2 in Science) of the historical college have been able to be ranked amongst the top 10.
