Centre recommends President's rule in Arunachal Pradesh

The Centre has recommended for imposition of President's rule in Arunachal Pradesh following the huge political turmoil prevailing in the state. Th recommendation has been sent to President Pranab Mukherjee for his consideration.

In an unscheduled meeting called by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday, the union cabinet recommended President's rule in the state. According to sources the government has consulted the Attorney General and concluded that law and order and governance in the state has collapsed which called for central intervention in the state.

The Congress party, which is ruling the state, has criticised the decision as trampling of democracy and said it would fight the case in court "tooth and nail".

Senior Congress leader Kapil Sibal attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the crisis and called him the “fountainhead” of political intolerance.

Chief Minister Nabam Tuki said, “This is really shocking as the Centre did not consult the state government before taking such a harsh decision. Arunachal is absolutely peaceful without even a single case of law and order breakdown reported in the past month.”

The political chaos started in Arunachal Pradesh on December 16 when 21 rebel Congress lawmakers joined 11 BJP and 2 independent members and tried to impeach Speaker Nabam Rebia at a makeshift venue. Chief Minister Nabam Tuki, including 27 MLAs in the 60-member Assembly boycotted the session calling the move unconstitutional and illegal.
